[CLOSED] The Moon Bar @ Damansara Heights (Bukit Damansara)

I don't usually do reviews on bars nor pubs for that matter, simply because there's nothing much to shout about when it comes to pub grub - it's all the same. People go there for drinks mostly and its probably a plus if the food turns out unexpectedly good. 

Contrary to its name, The Moon Bar tells a slightly more interesting story.

Something different to kick off your weekend - The Moon Bar features a riveting food and drinks menu, upbeat music and matching cocktails to add to the overall experience.



Opened barely 10 months back, The Moon Bar is the latest addition to the row of infamous brand names like Aria, Maliqa and Jarrod and Rawlins to just name a few - notably made popular for the bar vibe nonetheless.

The place is essentially segmented into two main areas - the bar outside and the bar inside. Yes, they have two bar counters! The bar inside is where the live band performs, some pretty sultry and jazzy tunes I heard, whereas the bar outside is fitted for those wanting to have tête-à-tête. 
 

The live band plays from 7pm onwards. It could get a little loud as the night goes on, so for those wanting to enjoy a peaceful night out, over a pint of beer of course, there's always the al fresco area outside.

Mocktails. Rm16.

A peek at the menu and one thing really appealed to me: A fusion of Western and Asian flavours and some pretty uncommon dishes like wild boar curry and bak kut teh - that's a first!

  Bacon Wrapped Roast Pork Belly. Rm23.
Black Pepper Lamb Parcel. Rm17.

The bacon wrapped roast pork belly skewers was a sequence of desire, pleasure and probably a little of remorse towards the end. It was fatty, salty and had a tad vinegar-ish aftertaste. Call me idiosyncratic but I kinda prefer the black pepper lamb parcel (stuffed money bag) on the side, personal preference nonetheless.

Hokkien Mee with extra Pork Lard. Rm22.

Thick noodles generously coated in black sauce then topped with crispy bits of sinful pork lard - sounds very much like someone's late night drunken intervention. Eaten together with sambal, the charred fragrant of this dish of sloppy noodles was delicious - one of my favorite dishes of the night.

Bak Kut Teh. Rm28.

Who in the world would have though of serving bak kut teh in a bar? It was undeniably a pot of heartwarming and chunky pork meat simmered in traditional herb broth, which well - tasted like a pot of soy sauce. The rice was amazing though - fragrant and cooked just nice.

Sri Lankan Mutton Varuval. Rm18.

This - definitely does not look like conventional pub grub. Chunks of mutton varuval stacked on top of each other howbeit probably not one of the most 'appetizing' way of serving a dish. I would very much prefer to have less black pepper and spice in it though - a tweak to an otherwise decent dish.

Suckling Wild Boar Curry. Rm28. 

Now, me and a few others were deliberating on what a suckling wild boar is and how it would taste, as people would normally just call it - pig, what exotic meat. Interestingly, I was delighted to discover that curry and pork works pretty darn well together. The rich curry flavored pork was not to overwhelming and just enough to excite me to go back for seconds.

Overall Rating: 6.5/10. First and foremost, I didn't come with high expectations - it was a bar after all, where food is categorically secondary. That said, the food was not exceptionally drool worthy though the hokkien mee and curry wild boar did came in above expectation. What I did like about the place was that it exudes a certain 'neighborhood' feel - a place where regulars would hang. I would definitely recommend this place to those wanting to enjoy a drink over jazzy tunes.
