Every neighbourhood has its own darling hangout spot and favourite restaurant. What's yours?
Quar/tet
Launched merely a fortnight ago, Quartet is the newest English breakfast and coffee hotspot to hit TTDI, amongst the old timers - Mukha and Artisans, though not exactly located in the same area.
But before I go further - there is no signboard!
Driving pass - that tiny grey rectangular label with the size 5 font didn't help at all. Where can see leh? FYI, it's the all-grey shop with the benches outside. Do get a signboard up soon please!
With a tagline that goes - your neighbourhood supply, this is the kind of place where you can just spend the entire lazy Sunday afternoon, slouched on the couch, in your most comfortable shorts and flip flops.
The menu is nicely printed in black and white, and on a thick cardboard.
Quartet's offerings are really simple - about a dozen traditional breakfast goodies to satiate your brunch cravings.
Daily Coffee Grind. Rm10.
Not exactly the prettiest bottle to drink from, still, what an creative idea of having daily blends served in pickled jars and cough-meds bottles - or so I say. This would make a wonderful party arrangement.
Cappuccino (Rm9). Latte (Rm9).
The coffee came smooth, aromatic and warm. Probably along the lines of Arabica or some low acidity blends. Didn't exactly take note but do correct me if I'm wrong.
Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese Bagel. Rm16.
It's been awhile since I've last had a bagel and I was glad I gave Quartet's version a go.
A huge bagel lathered with cream cheese spread, a thin slice of smoked salmon and layered with the right amount of crisp salad - the combination was delectable. The bagel was lightly toasted and had a nice chewy texture - a great contrast to the usual toast.
The smoked salmon is obviously the centrepiece of this bagel-delight. So, if you'd ask me, it looked like it needed more smoked salmon!
Eggs Ben. Rm15.
Quartet's version of Eggs Ben is this - just take it or leave it. A simple preparation of 2 nicely poached eggs on a slice of grilled ham and bread, then topped with hollandaise sauce.
Presentation didn't wow me - obviously. In fact, amongst that big and empty plate, I thought it looked a little sad and bare. A side salad or a some wedges would help vastly. And that ham - that flat and square ham - it needs to go. Like, fold in half or-something, it just looks too exposed under those poached eggs.
Overall Rating: 6/10. Coffee was great and food was good but - everything seemed just too simple. From the simple menu of a dozen breakfast offerings, to using the essential ingredients only, and of course, the lack of ideas when it comes to presentation. I figured it needs more spice, to make that typical boring English breakfast a little 'sexier'. Perhaps a signature cheese-baked-sour cream potato on every dish? I don't know really, somehow the current theme matches the grey doesn't it?
Quartet is located at:
21, Lorong Datuk Sulaiman 7, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, KL.
Open Daily 8am-9pm
A grey shop lot that faces a row of residential houses.
The ambiance looks great and I would like to have the bagel too! Thanks for the intro :)
ReplyDeletegreat place to chill no less. thanks darl =)
DeleteLooks super yummy babe! Can't wait to give it a go :D
ReplyDeletetry not to get the egg dishes! lol.
DeleteCan I be honest and say that their eggs benedict is ugly and such a lazy presentation? Haha!
ReplyDeleteyes! of course you can =)
DeleteI agree with your verdict nonetheless.
Went over to try during public holiday. Surprisingly, although their signboard is tiny, I knew it was the shop when I drove by. But in the end I gave it a miss due to my impatience to wait for a seat. *Roll eyes*
ReplyDeletethank god it's not a packed area - that row of shop lots. but yeah, no harm trying, the food is not bad - just lacking in presentation =)
Deletelooks yummy!!! will go for a try this weekend!!!!
ReplyDeleteif you're around the area, why not? =)
Deleteyummy, liked it!
ReplyDeletewho doesn't like English breakfast right? =)
DeleteSimple is good no? Well at least the poached eggs were nicely done and yea, more smoked salmon would be great for the bagel!
ReplyDeletesimple is great!
Deletebut presentation counts too! esp when it comes to simple food =)
I don't mine the plain presentation as long as the food is good :)
ReplyDeleteI agree - only if its a small price to pay =)
