Chinese New Year Menu 2014 @ Chicago Rib House 1 Utama


A surprise move from an authentic American Rib House. I was invited to sample their Porkalicious-Joy-Luck set, in conjunction with the upcoming Lunar New Year.

I hungrily sneaked-peeked at the menu prior and drooled with excitement when I saw that pork ribs (obviously) and salmon yee sang is part of the sampling list!

Needless to say, I took a multitude of pictures that evening, but of course, I've picked out my favourites to share.

Chicago Rib House

Also known as The City of Steaks & Ribs, Chicago Rib House inherited the American BBQ tradition, dishing-out slabs of amazing pork ribs, that is slow-smoked with charcoal and green hickory wood. With 70 years of history in tow, who are you to kid?

Taglined 'Built on Love, Peace and Bacon Grease', their menu features a hearty selection of dishes. From a full slab of Pork ribs (Rm59.90), Grilled salmon (Rm49.90), Chargrilled chicken (Rm48.90) and 7oz Striploin (Rm49.90), to American bar snacks like Pigs in a blanket (Rm18.90), Trio Sampler (Rm33.90), Hickory BBQ burger (Rm22.90) and Chicago's portillo dog (Rm15.90), Etc.


Priced at RM 88.80 (2 pax) and RM 168.80 (4 pax). You will be feasting on 4 Chinese New Year inspired dishes - Norwegian Salmon Yee Sang, Signature Platter, Braised Pork Belly and Baby Back Ribs.

If that's not enough, add-on the Drunken prawns flambĂ©ed with brandy (Rm68.80) and Jade Empress Mocktail (Rm23.80). What you'll see later, is meant for 4 pax.

Apart from the Signature Platter and Baby Back Ribs, this CNY feast will only be available from 18 January to 14 February 2014. 

Norwegian Salmon Yee Sang.


To me, Yee Sang has always been a Colourfully-Auspicious-Mess.

It came with an assortment of freshly sliced greens, thick slices of Norwegian salmon, drenched-over homemade plum sauce. I had fun tossing and salvaging through the mess, secretly vying for those salmon slices. Shhhh.....

Signature Platter. Rm39.90.


Bounteous of stuff happening on this platter - spare ribs, pork sausages, grilled fresh water prawns, grilled mussels, vegetable sticks and cheese dip - which I wrongly thought was baked beans at first sight!
What was missing though - Steak! Am I asking for too much?

Braised Pork Belly.


What I love about this dish - those sweet and chewy charred bits at the side, made out of passion fruit spices and wine. And of course - the pork belly, which I pulled and devoured hungrily.

If only the pork was a little juicier and moist, I would've enjoyed this much more. 

Baby Back Ribs. Rm33.90 (half slab). Rm59.90 (full slab).


Unleashing the inner-carnivore in me! I think I had a full slab of ribs!

Chargrilled tender baby back ribs glistening wildly with plum sauce. This was a finger-licking, bone-slurping, gregarious feast.

There are 5 types of sauces to choose from - Original BBQ, Honey garlic, Flaming Kansas city, Bourbon and Caramelised plum sauce.

Side Dishes.

 

Every order of Pork ribs comes with your choice of 2 side dishes - Beer battered fries, Coleslaw, Fragrant yellow rice, Baked potato, Mashed potatoes, Corn and Fresh vegetables.

My pick? Beer battered French fries.

Add on. Drunken Prawns Flambeed with Brandy. Rm68.80.


The texture of the prawns are unlike any other I've had.

Steamed with white wine and flambe with brandy, the prawns were surprisingly mushy in texture, but moist and bursting with flavours on every bite.

Add on. Jade Empress Mocktail. Rm23.80 (per jug).


A refreshing mocktail that is lightly spiced with cinnamon and apple bits, I easily gulped down glasses of this. Though I figured there were too much apple bits going around in there. And where's the teaspoon?

Overall Rating: 8/10. If you're looking for a place to 'lou sang' and not indulge in boring Chinese food, by all means, head over to Chicago Rib House and gorge on some ribs! And steaks too for that matter. Notwithstanding, this is my second favourite Rib House to date. Guess which is my first?
