There's this thing about doing buffet reviews that I'm still trying to get the hang of. There are loads to photograph and a galore going around - I really don't know where to start. To be fair to thyself, it is a buffet spread after all.
Are you ready for the Cheapest and Largest steamboat buffet spread in PJ?
Pak John Steamboat Buffet
Located at the tip of @eCurve, newly opened Pak John Steamboat Buffet have got heaps to offer.
With more than 100 all-you-can-eat variations, ranging from organic vegetables and mushrooms, to seafood, marinated and sliced meats, burgers, nuggets and fries, dim sum, waffles, ice cream and also a chocolate and marshmallow fondue to boost - this is one of the largest steamboat spread that I've come across!
All for the price of RM28 (weekdays) & RM36 (weekends)! Weekend deal includes one of the most raved about smoked duck in town! Will tell you about that shortly.
Your dining experience will be capped at 2 hours, though they are rather lenient with time limits, especially during off-peak hours. Please exercise your dining etiquette with care nonetheless.
To date, this is the second expansion of Pak Johns'. The first is at Wangsa Walk, but its menu is on a la carte basis only. Both outlets are Halal.
The place is huge. It can accommodate about 200-250 pax per seating, with 2 VIP rooms. The setting is well-furnished and everything is still spanking new and polished. Ambience is extremely inviting and conducive for big groups and families with kids as well.
Despite being located in a rather secluded corner of ecurve, the place was filled with jolly people, busily picking-out and slurping on their steamboat-fest that evening. I - was one of them.
Steamboat Selections. There are 3 soup base to choose from - miso, chicken and tom yum.
Homemade Sauces. An assortment of homemade sauces that was a tad diluted but oh-so-fiery! Definitely not meant for the weaker tastebuds.
Marinated Meats. There are 6 types of marinated meats on display - 4 chicken and 2 beef.
Sliced Meats. There are 4 types of sliced meats - Smoked duck breast, Australian beef slices, Smoked abalone and New Zealand lamb slices. Now - the Smoked duck - those were toothsome and heavenly. The rest of the sliced meats were equally good. This, or the marinated meats above? I would definitely pick this.
Noodles. Pick and choose from 10 different types of Noodles. We had a go at the wide-flat noodles as well as the Japanese rolled rice noodles (in green-white transparent container). We were told that those are really good for digestion. Try it!
Hot Food. Didn't get to have much of these, except for the fried yong tao foo and nuggets. The nuggets looked rather similar to the McD versions, hence, my tempation to sample.
Ice Cream. Ice cream potong - undoubtedly a childhood favourite for many. I, on the other hand, wasn't particularly fond of the one I had. I had the red bean flavour (far left of picture below). Likewise the swirl of vanilla ice cream that I sampled, which came far too milky for my liking.
Waffles. I love waffles - and pancakes too for that matter. So imagine my excitement when I saw a waffle counter with 6 different spreads to choose from! For those who enjoy thin and light waffles, this is for you.
Chocolate Fondue. A chocolate and marshmallow fondue! It wouldn't hurt to include some fruit trays on the side as well.
Coffee & Juices.
Chinese New Year Additions. To celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year, they are throwing in 5 traditional Chinese dishes on the side, for your eating-pleasure.
Apart from the quintessential buffet offerings that I've been raving about above, there are a couple of things that is worth mentioning.
The music was too loud - it reminded me of clubbing. Perhaps to attract attention to this quieter side of the mall, but being seated inside, I didn't quite appreciate screaming on top of my lungs the entire night.
Because of its vast variety, expect to see quite an amount of frozen food. I doubt you'll find many fresh ingredients here.
It was a brilliant idea to have a barbecue pan attached to a steamboat pot, but I figured it was a hazard to have cables and cords dangling from the pot. Cord protector or cable covers perhaps?
