Taang Shifu @ Paradigm Mall PJ

My reservation towards typical Chinese restaurants like these are -

I have to come in a large group because most dishes come in huge portions, prices would probably be exorbitant knowing that exquisite ingredients like abalone and scallops are served, and from the looks of it's interior-decor, I would most likely be paying double for everything.

Reasonable assumptions? Well, not really in this case.

Taang Shifu

You'd probably walked pass Taang Shifu numerous times, especially if you're approaching from the escalators, and evidently from the loud-greetings of servers at the door.

Despite that, I've never step foot into Taang Shifu - until today.

A glimpse at the menu and I was pleasantly surprised. Besides traditional Chinese dishes, there is a myriad of exquisite Chinese delights, from scallops to abalone, and birds nest to ginseng soup. A la carte dishes like mee sua, congee and some rice dishes are also available. Portions are meant for one, hence, you need not order to share.

Prices are remarkably affordable, in fact, comparable to any other mid-tier Chinese restaurants, and along the likes of Fong Lye, but with much more wholesome choices to boost.

To date, there is 11 Taang Shifu branches in Malaysia.

Dried Scallop Soup Meesua. Rm16.90.

Strands of delicate meesua, soaked in a nutritious and savory broth, topped with a handful of mini dried scallops and red dates, slices of abalone and a portion of chicken drumstick, cooked to a tender perfection.

Dried Scallop Porridge with Whitebait. Rm12.90.

One of the most luscious porridge I've had in awhile! A generous pot of white porridge, served with an abundance of chewy whitebait (a type of fish) beneath, and topped with a handful of dried scallops, baby anchovies as well as red dates.

The dried scallops added a sweet and chewy bite to every spoonful and the dried anchovies, gave an extra crunch to the overall dish. The texture of the porridge could've been finer and a little more consistent nonetheless.

Caramel Ginger Beancurd. Rm5.90.

Resembling the massive traditional taofufa wooden bucket, this caramel and ginger infused beancurd was slightly chilled when I had my first mouthful. But - it was extremely sweet!

Overall Rating: 7.5/10. I'm not a huge fan of franchised restaurants, but Taang Shifu surprised me. I was half expecting extremely overrated dishes, but what I had that evening was simple and delicious. A decent Chinese Restaurant to visit in Paradigm Mall, PJ.

  1. Eh, your first impression of that outlet is like that ah? My perception of it was somehow just a normal Chinese restaurant. Didn't know it had upper class type of dishes.
