It's that time of the year again, for the Malaysian International Gourmet Festival (MIGF).
For those who are not familiar with this international event - top restaurants in the country, hailed by their respective top chefs, will participate and showcase a specially crafted, Festival Menu. This annual event will last till the end of October.
To kick start this year's tasting, I will be sampling some of Signature at The Roof's goodies today. I always get psyched up at things like these.
Signature at The Roof
The Roof is not new to me. For someone who lives ten minutes away, I frequent this place fairly often. It has everything under one roof!
The Roof occupies the topmost level of First Avenue. Turn left once you hit Sky Level from the elevators and you'd get Malt & Leaf (the classy bar), Score Bar (the casual pub), Stratosphere (the helipad), and PLAY (the club). Turn right and it'll lead you straight to Signature by The Hills, the restaurant, bar and lounge.
Signature at The Roof |
A swanky yet contemporary dining room that will probably make everyone dress to impress. Ladies, you may want to don a frock and a pair of classy heels while you're at it. Guys, please wear a shirt.
Wrong. There's a marvelous selection of alcoholic beverages served here, from limited edition fine wines to branded champagnes and not forgetting their all-time favorite signature cocktails. It is also a bar and a lounge.
Don't be confused with what Malt & Leaf and Score bar has. The former have a good range of whisky in their menu and the latter serves beer. But if you're up for some cocktails and anything else under the same roof - come here.
Personal opinion, the Signature cocktails menu should be included in Malt & Leaf's drinks menu.
Watermelon Slush (Vodka, Midori, Lychee liqueur, Watermelon). Rm40. |
Coco Nutz (Malibu, Rum, Banana liqueur, Coconut cream). Rm28. |
Recommended by one of my friend, this is his favorite drink - and it is now mine too. Icy cold, refreshing and utterly addictive, coconut infused cocktail. It reminds me of a great vacay at Bali. I will be back for more.
While we waited for our feast to be served, we sipped and swirled on some De Bortoli Chardonnay.
This 3-course Festival Menu (Rm249 NETT) consist of a starter and soup, a main course and ends with a dessert. Wine pairing (Rm349 NETT) is available upon request.
Signature Clear Coconut Seafood Soup |
I have a love-hate relationship with prawns. I love eating them; I hate peeling them. Personal preference aside, this Vietnamese inspired soup was served warm, sweet and had a good selection of exquisite seafood inside.
Signature Summer Salad with Softshell Crab |
Served on a chopping board - soft shell crab and ebiko on a bed of argula. The fusion combination of the tangy mango salad at the side confuses me though. The salad were crisp but the choice of sauces could've been better.
New York Striploin |
New York Striploin |
My pick of the meal - New York Striploin glazed with teriyaki sauce with saffron infused capelini. This is so cute - grill your own meat on the mini charcoal stove. The meat was bursting with flavors and juicy on every mouthful.
Also my favorite picture taken of the night. Love the effects!
Crispy Baramundi |
The oriental-style baramundi that we had were nicely flaked and was quite alright overall. But with all the creative thingamajig happening above, the fish was easily forgettable.
King Prawns and Spaghetti |
Again, I had a hard time prying off the shell. And the jar - not a great idea either. Presentation aside, the prawns were bouncy and the spicy creme sauce added a nice twang to it.
Signature Cendol |
The presentation of this simple Malaysia favorite had a creative flair to it. You'd get red beans puree at the bottom, pandan mousse in between and topped with coconut ice cream and sprinkles of palm sugar brittle. It's very much thicker than your typical cendol. Not exactly my cup of tea but my friend really enjoyed it.
Spicy Chocolate Lava |
Unlike most chocolate lava that I've had in the past, this one came a little more crusty and lightly glazed on the outside and inside, oozing chocolate lava. Again, not a huge fan but my friend thought otherwise.
Last but not least, some blurry 0.3MP phone pictures of me and Carol.
Overall Rating: 7/10. I had a great meal tonight but it could have been better. As with any new restaurant, there were a couple of teething problems that can be improved. When it comes to fusion food, the mixture of East-meets-West takes a lot of homework to perfect and perhaps with an acquired taste to like as well. Expectations aside, my favorite dish would have to be the New York Sirloin and my least favorite, the Cendol dessert. Again, the dishes you see in today's write up is not part of Signature's everyday menu. It's a limited time only MIGF menu. On that note, they will be relaunching their brunch menu really soon. And we, Malaysians, love our brunch right? What more being seated on sky level!
