Late lunch in the city on a public holiday, bypassing the horrendous weekday traffic - but not the neverending crowd.
VCR Cafe
"It's that one," I pointed at the black-colored shoplot, right at the corner.
We parked across the street and scrambled into a lively and bustling VCR that afternoon, quite the contrary from the serene surroundings outside. It was a public holiday and the cafe was overflowing with city dwellers. I even spotted a few popular personalities while I was there.
We shared a table with a few other hungry patrons uptsairs and food was served in no time.
Raspberry Royale (Rm13). Flat White (Rm11).
I think I've lost my coffee-palate. I almost, always, just order tea nowadays. My friend liked the coffee here nevertheless. I shall reconsider my order next time.
Potato Waffles. Rm22.
The potato waffle came beautifully topped with sauteed mushroom fricassee, 63°C egg, a dollop of sambal inspired tomato chutney and a scatter of rosemary - too much of it, which I meticulously picked out in the end.
Turkish Baked Eggs. Rm24.
The chick peas and 63°C egg were pleasant, but I thought the greek yogurt and pistachio dusting combo didn't quite work, the chicken chipotle was close to nonexistent, and the tomato sauce base overly diluted. The best part of the dish for me was the sourdough bread.
Overall Rating: 7/10. The one thing I really liked about VCR would probably be their less than conventional brunch menu - I think I'm over the Eggs Ben and Big Breakfast phase. Here, you'd get a mishmash of brunch goodies, served with that little bit of extra ingredient. Despite the passable Turkish Baked Eggs, I will return to sample their much talked about Broiche French Toast.
