I have to admit, Indian cuisine is uncommon in my to-eat-list, mainly because of my rather intolerable tastebuds towards everything hot and spicy, which Indian food is typically known to be.
Having said that, I had a
flaming time at
Malgudi, where I was introduced to a marvelous array of Southern and Northern Indian cuisine, alongside loads of interesting flavors and textures, made authentic by designated chefs from India.
And hey, correct that Malaysian preception please, Indian food is not
mamak food!
Looks like my Thaipusam celebration just got a little better this year. I can't wait to tell you about my feast!
Let's start with the appetizers shall we?
I love Papadums! The basket of four came with a serving of mint sauce at the side, which I didn't need obviously, all I wanted was just the papadums. All mine. I also had a taste of the Nandu Rasam (Rm7) and Murugakai Rasam (Rm5), a crab and chicken stock based soup. |
These Roti and Naans are best eaten, dipped in rich and thick Mushroom Masala (Rm11) or Palak Paneer (Rm12) (spinach and cottage cheese in garlic cream sauce), adding delightful flavors to an otherwise unexciting flatbread. |
The Prawn Varuval (Rm18) or prawn fry, came marinated with Malgudi's secret sauces, served on chopped sauteed red onions. I thought the prawns were lacking springiness but we finished it nevertheless. |
This was fun to eat! The Chicken Lollipop (Rm14) was fatty, sweet, sticky, not at all fiery and had flavors which weren't as spiced-up as I thought it would be. Oddly, it reminded me of buffalo wings. |
Malgudi's Tandoor Platter (Rm30) showcased tandoori chicken, fish and prawns. All in which came beautifully done in slightly charred red and yellow tandoori hues, marinated in Malgudi's masala and spices. |
The Chips Combo (Rm14) came with crunchy and deep fried bittergourd, cauliflower and shreds of wrinkly onions - those were exceptionally moreish. |
These gorgeous bright red Squid 65 (Rm14) and Chicken 65 (Rm9) (not in picture) have got to be among my favorites of the meal. Usually coated with crisp masala batter, it adds hints of sweetness to every bite. |
Ice water please! The Pomfret Fish Masala (Rm30-Rm38) came coated in spicy tomato based sauce, was crispy on the outside, yet moist in the middle. Despite the heat, I couldn't help myself but reached for second helpings. |
I sampled both the Chicken Biryani (Rm16) (main picture) and the Mutton Biryani (Rm19), made fragrant with Malgudi's masala. The former comes with chicken drumstick and an egg, but I enjoyed the latter more - the succulent chunks of mutton added juicy flavors to the overall dish. |
First time having this dessert! The white Rasagula (Rm5) was served chilled and the deep fried Gulab Jamun (Rm5) was served warm. Interestingly enough, both had mushy textures and was intensely sweet - too sweet in fact, I wasn't a fan. Imagine having condensed milk ball soaked in sugar syrup. |
Overall Rating: 7.5/10. We were stuffed by the time we were done, the feast was satisfying to say the least. The Mutton Biryani, Chips Combo, Squid And Chicken 65, Tandoor Platter, Garlic Naan And Palak Panner would be my top picks. If you're looking for an affordable and dependable Indian Restaurant within the vincinity of PJ, Malgudi would fair you well. And as for me, I think I've found one of my favorites to date.
