Melur & Thyme
Melur & Thyme aims to offer a memorable mix of East and West - paying tribute to authenticity whilst adding an air of modern elegance to the experience.
Opened slightly more than a month ago and hopefully recovered a little from the new restaurant syndrome already, of course I was still anxious to sample. At peak Friday lunch time, we joined the fidgety crowd at the front entrance while we waited for servers to locate us a vacant table.
I thought the kopitiam influence came with a contemporary twist - wireframe tables and chairs, Bali inspired bar counter tops and so forth.
Compared with my prior visit, I noticed that they eventually added more tables and chairs in an attempt to cater to the growing crowd. The corridor has now an additional row of tables.
First look at the menu and I though - this resembles Madam Kwan's but much simpler and priced higher.
The waiters were really attentive, dropping by our table numerous times to check if we were ready to order. Orders came prompt as well, within 15 minutes.
Beef Burger with Foie Gras. Rm39++.
Probably not the best place to have foie gras, but my friend was craving for burgers and we thought, why not give the most expensive main course on the menu a go? The portion came generous - packed with deliciously dressed fresh salad and nicely seasoned hot chips.
How did the burger fair? Topped with shallow fried foie gras, the grilled minced beef patty was a tad coarse but still came off flavoursome and enjoyable to eat. That said, foie gras - where oh? It came so little that it was close to none.
Crusted Baked Hake Fish. Rm32++.
The hake fish - sealed with spices then baked. It was on the verge of being a little dry but I had no trouble
mushing it up with the dressings from the plate. The mashed potato - was mashed smooth yet not too creamy and when eaten together with bread crumbs that fell off the fish, it was gooood. What I didn't like about it though, was that it tasted exactly like the ones from the box - yes, frozen ones.
Overall Rating: 5.5/10. Overall, the meal was a pretty decent one but probably memorable for the wrong reasons. At the end of the day, it probably doesn't matter that much, I suppose; food and friendly service speaks far more eloquently than the ambience to me.
